We first visited Malaga (for a month) in January 2018, and were given a ‘Secret Malaga’ tour as a Christmas present. Juan Diego proved to be an excellent and personable guide to the non-obvious (such as archaeological remains revealed and preserved within new structures), to quirky cafes and statuary, to the richness of structure and detail of so many buildings once you look high above the shopping level, and to so much else. We were hooked, and joined up with him again a year later on his very different but equally absorbing tour of Malaga’s story during the Spanish Civil War. After the strange Covid years, we were back in February this year and contacted Juan Diego in advance to see what he was up to – and his perceptive archaeological tour of the still-discernible effects on Malaga from the succession of civilisations from the Phoenicians onwards became the highlight of our stay. Architect, artist, archaeologist, novelist, deeply devoted to giving of his best to you the client – and a lovely guy as well.
